Republic Day Speech- 1
Republic Day Essay
Today, we live in a country where we are free and we have our basic rights. We can speak without any fear, We can choose our work, we have freedom to express our thoughts and no one can force us against our will. In case someone tries to force us or for that matter tries to gives us advice which we do not like, we can confront the person and can tell the person to stop that. But this was not the case few decades earlier. Our country was under the British rule and we didn’t have any say about anything in our own country. Yes, there were struggles everyday and everywhere which we can’t even imagine. After a long struggle of our freedom fighters, our country became independent on 15th August 1947, but we were not having our own laws and regulations. India was not a republic nation at that time.
What does republic mean? So friends, the word republic means ‘A state in which the supreme power is held by the people who are the elected representatives chosen by the people of the country or state.’ As Abrahim Lincon had simplified the meaning “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” Today I can proudly say that, India is the largest democracy of the world and that is possible because of our constitution and republic status.
To become absolutely independent, we needed our constitution for which our leaders had started to work in December 1946, well before we actually got our freedom. On 29th August 1947, drafting committee was appointed under the ledership of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar. It took 2years 11months and 18 Days to draft the constitution, on 26th November 1949, the constitution was passed and adopted by the assembly which came into effect on 26th January 1950. This day was chosen as it had historic importance. 20 years before, on 26th January 1930 Indian National Congress had declared ‘poorn svaraj’ for India and Pt.Jawahar Laal Nehru hoisted the flag in Lahore. So, on 26th January 1950, India became not only a free country but also became an independent and Republic nation and every year we celebrate this day as Republic Day of India.
Along with Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti, Republic Day is also observed as national festival and declared as a national holiday. It is celebrated all over the country with great enthusiasm and respect. People wish each other, distribute sweets and patriotic songs can be heard in streets. In schools, colleges and government offices our national flag is hoisted and national anthem is sung. Many school and colleges organize various like painting competition, essay writing, speech competition, cultural programs and Republic Day parade.
Every year, the main Republic Day celebration happens at Rajpath in New Delhi with great enthusiasm and zeal. Every year, the head of state or government of another country is invited as the guest of honor. First, the prime minister lays a floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a memorial to fallen soldiers at the India Gate, which is followed by 2 minutes silence in the memory of fallen soldiers. Then, the president of India hoists the National flag, as the National Anthem is played and a 21-gun salute is given. Next important awards like the Ashok chakra and kirti chakra are given away by the president. This is followed by the regiments of Armed forces starting their march past. Nine to twelve different regiments of the Indian Army in addition to the Navy and Air force with their bands march past in all their finery and official decorations. The president of India, who is the commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed forces, takes the salute. Twelve contingents of various para-military forces of India and other civil forces also take part in this parade.
Children who recive the National Bravery Award ride past the spectators on colorfully decorated elephants or vehicles. The parade traditionally ends with dare devil motor cycle riding display, by motorcycle units of the Armed Forces and civil security services and a fly past by the Indian Air force jets and helicopters. Tableau from various states signifying their culture, are displayed.
People from all over the country and outside the country come to witness the spectacular show. Also, the whole nation watches the celebration on TV as it being telecasted on national television.
The Beating Retreat ceremony officially denotes the and of Republic Day festivities, which is conducted on the evening of 29 January, the third day after the Republic Day. It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian air Force at Rashtrpati Bhawan.
It in not only a celebration but a proud moment for whole nation. We should always put our best foot forward to maintain the peace and harmony inside the country. Let’s us all promise today, to take the nation to the new heights of social, cultural, technological and economic progress and growth. Friends, at the end once again, I salute to all the freedom fighters and brave soldiers because of whom we are celebrating his day and I wish you all a Happy Republic Day.
