Swami Vivekananda philosophy of Education

 

Q:- Describe the educational thoughts of swami Vivekananda and their impact on Indian education system?

 

*Swami Vivekananda:-

     Swami Vivekananda was born on12 January 1863 in Calcutta. His name was Narendra Nath Datta before becoming monk. His father was vishwanath Datta and he was a successful attorney and his mother was Bhuvaneshwari Devi. He came under the influence of sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa when he was in college and 17 years old.

    He was very excellent in studies, music, poetry and gymnastics. He studied all the systems of western philosophy.


*Philosophy of Education of vivekananda’s :-

     According to his philosophy of education. Education is a continuous process and should cover aspects of life such as: physical, mental, emotional, intellectual, moral and spiritual. His educational philosophy is based on Vedanta and Upanishads.

    He was against book learning and believed that education is not all about book learning and getting information. Education is life-building process, man making process, assimilations of ideas and characters-forming.

 

Swami Vivekananda philosophy of Education

*Vivekananda’s concept of Education:-

  -Self Education:-

     Education is self realization, every child is growing naturally and a men must teach themselves and the duty of teacher should remove obstacles for his path and guide them towards success and opportunities.

-Education for all:-

    He want education for all Indians.

-Education according to needs of children:-

    Teaching should be as per child need, interest and demand.

-Women’s Education:-

  He was in favour of education for women like swami Dayanand and that the living standard can’t be improved only by giving the respect to women. So education should be given to women for the country growth.

-National system of Education:-

   He believed that education must be for national needs, problems, aspirations and general role in the development of country.

 

*Aims of Education:-

   -Moral, spiritual and character development.

  -Education for self reliance

 - Education for physical development

 - for universal brotherhood

- Practical side of life (Bred and Butter aim)

 - Education for religious development

 - Vocational aim


*Curriculum as per Vivekananda:-

-Harmony of science and Vedanta:-

     He focused on study of religious, spiritual, Vedanta and also emphasises on scientific knowledge.

-Common language:-

   He emphasises use of a common language.

-Regional language (mother tongue), Sanskrit, any link Language History, geography, economics etc. He also recommended the study of subjects like history, geography, economics, mathematics, home science, psychology and agriculture.

-Physical and vocational education.


*Methods of Teaching and Role of a Teacher:-

-Concentration

-Self study

-Discussion method

-Teacher should be act like as friend, philosopher and guide

-Teacher should be dedicated to his profession

-Teacher should come down as per level of pupils.
